Ameriški farmer je bil na robu propada. Zemljo je prizadela katastrofalna suša. Pridelek na polju se je sušil, v vodnjakih je zmanjkalo vode. V tej stiski se je pogodil z veliko naftno družbo, ki je domnevala, da so pod njegovimi polji ležišča nafte. Po pogodbi bi kmet začel s poskusnimi vrtinami na stroške naftne družbe. Če bi kmet našel nafto, bi mu pripadal visok odstotek dobička od črpanja in prodaje. Če pa nafte ne bo, mu bo propadla še tako skromna žetev.

Kmet ni imel nikakršne izbire. Globoko je zabredel v dolgove in iskal je rešitev. Na svoje veliko začudenje je v nekaj mesecih vrtanja prišel do nafte.

Izkazalo se je, da so bila pod njegovo skopo zemljo bogata najdišča nafte.
